ADJ Releases myDMX-RM, A Powerful New Standalone Interface For myDMX 3.0

ADJ is pleased to announce the release of its new myDMX-RM lighting control interface that not only acts as a hardware dongle for the myDMX 3.0 software but also offers internal storage with 16 programmable trigger buttons. This makes the unit ideal for use in a wide variety of situations where simple, standalone lighting control is required.

myDMX is ADJ’s extremely popular multi-platform DMX control software / hardware system (Windows and Mac OSX compatible) that offers an easy-to-use interface, powerful features and an affordable price tag. Featuring a large library of fixture profiles – as well as a custom Profile Editor – it is easy to setup myDMX to control any DMX-compatible lighting or effects equipment. An intuitive interface and powerful features (including a drag-and-drop effects generator) then make programming and controlling complex shows a breeze, while the latest version of the software – 3.0 – also includes additional useful features such as Blind Editing (the ability to change scenes without outputting DMX) and the option to playback multiple scenes at a time.

The myDMX-RM is a robust 19” rack mountable interface that connects a computer running the myDMX 3.0 software, via USB, to a DMX-controllable lighting rig through a standard XLR connection. Out of the box, the unit allows use of myDMX 3.0 Express Mode, which includes all of the standard features needed to setup, program and control a lightshow. It is then possible to upgrade the software (via store.dmxsoft.com) to unlock advanced features such as a 3D Visualizer, MIDI control and ‘Easy Remote’ smartphone/tablet control app).

Through the software it is also possible to assign lighting programs to each of the myDMX-RM’s 16 trigger buttons. These programs are then stored on the device itself and can be recalled, simply by pushing the button, even if the computer running myDMX 3.0 has been disconnected. This makes the unit ideal for use in situations where it isn’t possible to have a lighting operator constantly on hand, for example in a bar, school or event venue.

It is also perfect for use in venues such as lounge clubs where a lighting operator will arrive part way through the day’s operating hours. The venue manager can easily select a pre-programmed ‘warm-up’ Scene, using one of the myDMX-RM’s trigger buttons, when the venue opens. Later, when it’s time to transition from a bar atmosphere to full-on dancing, the lighting operator can hook up their laptop to the interface and seamlessly assume full control of the rig.

Likewise, the unit is ideal for small clubs that can’t justify the expense of a designated lighting operator. The myDMX-RM can be pre-programmed with a variety of different looks and effects which can then easily be triggered by the DJ to complement their musical mix.

Finally, the myDMX-RM can also be used by lighting designers and operators to provide a level of backup against a computer crash. When controlling a rig from myDMX through the myDMX-RM important scenes can be stored on the unit’s internal memory so that if the computer running the software crashes, or stop functioning for any reason, changes to the lightshow can still be made using the RM’s trigger buttons while the computer issue is resolved.

The myDMX-RM’s 16 trigger buttons are all backlit, to provide a simple visual indication of which stored program is currently running. On its back panel, the unit also features both 3-pin and 5-pin XLR sockets meaning that it can easily be connected to any DMX-compatible lighting fixture. The unit allows control of a full DMX universe (512 control channels) in both its Live and Standalone modes, while multiple interfaces can be ‘stacked’ to allow control of two or three universes of DMX channels from a single myDMX program.

“myDMX continues to be extremely popular with many different types of entertainment lighting users”, comments ADJ USA’s National Sales Manager, Alfred Gonzales, “but the new myDMX-RM will open it up for even more potential applications. It’s convenient 19” rack-mount casing and flexible standalone function makes it ideal for installation in a wide variety of venues that need the ability to very simply switch between a variety of pre-programed lighting looks. I’m sure it will appeal to many installers who will be able to go in to a venue, setup an impressive lightshow for their clients, program it using their laptop and then leave just the myDMX-RM to provide the flexibility of selecting different programs without the need for a dedicated computer or for staff to learn how to use the myDMX software.”

Its combination of a tough rack-mountable case, powerful internal memory and flexible trigger buttons make the myDMX-RM the ultimate myDMX 3.0 dongle. It is sure to not only appeal to existing users of the software but also open it up to many new users who have a need for a standalone DMX interface that offers the flexibility of a fully-featured software control solution.

Pioneer’s newest arrival is here: Meet the DDJ-SX3

Pioneer has upgraded one of their popular DJ controllers to create the 4-channel DDJ-SX3.

Designed for dedicated use with Serato DJ Pro (previously known as Serato DJ), the features and expanded connectivity of the new controller enable you to make smooth transitions between DJs, guest speakers, musical genres and individual tracks. With a familiar layout and a high-quality casing, the DDJ-SX3 improves on the DDJ-SX2, which earned a strong reputation with a wide range of people including professional mobile DJs.

The new controller’s intuitive interface and professional features let you bring fresh creativity to your performances at all kinds of gigs, from club nights and parties to weddings and corporate events. It also offers expanded connectivity to give you greater flexibility when you’re juggling DJs, MCs and guest speakers. Changeovers are now seamless, even when the DJ playing before you uses a different laptop, as you can each plug into one of the dual USB ports at the same time.1

Thanks to the dedicated Mic input terminal on the front of the DDJ-SX3, you can talk to the crowd without needing to occupy any of the four mixer channels. And with twin Mic inputs on the rear of the controller, you can keep hold of one Mic while another two are out on the floor, without interrupting your mix. Control the level, tweak EQs and apply FX to all three Mics independently. Spice up your sets with the four popular Sound Color FX and use the Key Shift, Key Sync and Pitch Play features to effortlessly mix tracks harmonically and create live remixes.

The DDJ-SX3 will be available from early June 2018 at an MAP of $999. Watch the introduction video or find out more about the controller.

Unlock Serato DJ Pro by plugging the DDJ-SX3 into a computer running the software. You don’t need a subscription or license key. Download Serato DJ Pro.

A voucher for the Serato Flip and Pitch ‘n Time DJ Expansion Packs is included with the DDJ-SX3, so you can use Flip, Key Shift, Key Sync, Pitch Play and other advanced features for free.

1Both computers require Serato DJ Pro software.

KEY FEATURES OF THE DDJ-SX3

  1. Three Mic inputs, plus Mic FX
A dedicated Mic input and level control knob on the front panel of the DDJ-SX3 comes in addition to the popular twin Mic inputs inherited from the DDJ-SX2, which are found on the rear panel. You can control the level, EQ and low-cut filter, and add reverb and compressor to each – enabling you to tweak the sound to suit the venue and ensure clear speech and vocals. You can also enhance performances by applying Sound Color FX such as Echo, plus Serato DJ Pro FX, to the two Mics plugged into the rear panel.

  1. Dual USB ports

Connect two computers running Serato DJ Pro at the same time for seamless DJ transitions or back-to-back performances. Or connect a backup computer in case your laptop crashes.

  1. Sound Color FX
Add texture and unique sounds to your mixes using the popular Filter, Echo, Jet and Noise FX.

  1. Clear visual design maximising Serato DJ Pro features
The DDJ-SX3 inherits the interface design of our professional so you can intuitively use all its features.

  • Multicolored Performance Pads

Trigger 11 Serato DJ Pro features including Hot Cues, Sampler and Pitch Play with the large, multicolored Performance Pads. Watch their colors and illumination change instantly to show the selected pad mode and playing status.

  • Jog wheels with reduced latency
Scratching feels natural on the jog wheels, which feature reduced latency compared to those on the DDJ-SX2. Get instant information about the current playback status and position from the illuminating On Jog Display for more precise performances.

  • Clear design with quality look and feel

The DDJ-SX3 feels natural to use thanks to the clear visual division of the player and mixer sections, which feature high-quality black hairline aluminium and gunmetal grey finishes respectively.

  1. Advanced key-related features via Pitch ‘n Time DJ (license included)
A voucher for Serato Pitch ‘n Time DJ is included with the DDJ-SX3 so you can use Key Shift, Key Sync, Pitch Play and other advanced features to smoothly and harmonically mix tracks. Adjust the key of tracks by semitone with Key Shift, and sync the keys of tracks during mixes with Key Sync. Pitch Play lets you trigger your Hot Cues in a range of different keys and assign them to the controller’s Performance Pads so you can play them like a keyboard.

  1. Stand-alone DJ mixer with multiple inputs/outputs
The DDJ-SX3 has four external input terminals for multi players, turntables, DJ controllers and more. Connect various types of speakers to the XLR and RCA master out terminals and the TRS jack booth out terminal. You can also use the DDJ-SX3 as a stand-alone DJ mixer without connecting a computer. Connect multi players and analog turntables and use them with the controller’s mixer section.

  1. Other features
  • Serato Flip: A voucher for Serato Flip is included with the DDJ-SX3 so you can create and save Hot Cue sequences to make custom edits of your tracks and use the dedicated Serato Flip controls to play them back at the touch of a button. Get even more creative by skipping or repeating track sections on the fly.
  • Grab handles on both sides: Easy to carry and set up.
  • Mic input circuit: Clear audio without distortion, even with high input level.
  • Needle search pad: Instantly jump to a specific part of a track with a simple touch of the pad.
  • Slip Mode: Silently keeps a track playing during a loop, sample, or Hot Cue. Release the jog wheel and the track comes back at exactly the right place.
  • Paid upgrade to Serato DVS: For Serato DJ Pro deck control using multi players and turntables (Expansion Pack available separately).

Where Everybody Knew Your Name

By Tony Fernandez:

In the seemingly never-ending social media debate of Digital vs Vinyl, you hear the same points brought up time after time…

Vinyl is better

Digital is better

Record crates suck (this is actually true…)

Vinyl sounds warmer

Digital sounds cleaner

Vinyl made selection a skill

Digital made selection ubiquitous

Blah, blah, blah….

But the query that inspired me to put these words down was this: To what extent do you miss the social interaction with music /record store employees (who were usually fellow music lovers and/or DJs) that was inherent in buying vinyl records vs the isolated process of digital downloads?

I have to admit when I think about it I do miss that aspect of the vinyl world.

Going to record stores for me was an adventure. I was lucky enough to do a little bit of traveling and I would always check out the local record shops when I would be in a new town. It never failed that I would find some diamond in the rough that was overlooked by everyone else.

It was like a secret society. Once people knew you were a DJ and became a “regular”, things opened up. People treated you nicer and would grant you access to areas of the store the general public didn’t have. They would show you the under the counter stuff or the back room stuff.   Getting access to promo releases and white label prints on a retail level was not an easy feat. I’m glad to say I was able to cultivate a nice circle of stores where I could find some really choice pieces of wax.

And honestly, the people the worked there, the managers and the owners, they were really about the music. And that’s the part that was cool. It was like walking into the Cheer’s Bar, the people there would know who you were, be happy to see you and just catch up. I’m pretty sure to some I was just another customer, and that was OK. But by and large, everyone I met at the record store was very cool and always willing to help you in the task of finding the unique piece.

It was all about the journey. Making road trips to certain record stores because you were either going to play there that night or you just wanted to make a road trip and eat at that local restaurant. One thing for certain, the trip was not going to be in vain. You’d either come back with awesome tunes, a great meal or both.

I love playing “records”. But I still use SSL. I don’t miss lugging 40 lb crates loaded with vinyl. I don’t really miss the act of digging in the crates. I still do that in the digital space now. Not the same, but the results are the same. I do miss making those road trips and being a vinyl Indiana Jones. Nothing really beat having that piece of wax in your hand, placing it on the platter, dropping the track and having your friends ask, where did you find that?

My answer was always the same… don’t worry about it, it doesn’t matter, I got the last one.

Keep ‘em spinning.

New Lighting mode coming to rekordboxTM, to be released in February

Following the release of rekordbox ver 5.1 on 18th January 2018, the next version of Pioneer’s music management application, rekordbox, will be available on 20th February 2018. The updated software will bring new features to rekordbox dj including Lighting mode, which enables you to easily sync lights with your music during a performance.

Using the advanced phrase analysis algorithm in rekordbox (ver 5.1), Lighting mode automatically creates exciting lighting sequences in sync with the tracks in your rekordbox library, drastically reducing pre-performance preparation time. The information generated in Lighting mode can be sent to any lighting fixture that supports DMX5121 via the RB-DMX1, a new dedicated DMX interface.

How to use Lighting mode

To control DMX512-supported lighting fixtures using rekordbox dj, you need the dedicated DMX interface, RB-DMX1.

The RB-DMX1 will be available from early March 2018 at an MAP of $349. It comes with a bundled license key for our professional DJ performance application rekordbox dj, worth $129.

Watch our introduction video for Lighting mode or find out more about the RB-DMX1, a new dedicated DMX interface.

1DMX512 is a communication protocol used for controlling stage lighting equipment.

KEY FEATURES OF REKORDBOX LIGHTING MODE

  1. Automatic creation of lighting patterns in sync with your music

The newly developed phrase analysis algorithm in rekordbox detects characteristics of each phrase in a track. Effective lighting patterns are then automatically created in perfect sync with the phrase information, minimising the time you need to prepare for a DJ and lighting performance.

  1. Macro Mapping feature for easily customizing lighting patterns

Easily customise lighting patterns by simply selecting your favourite sequences from a wealth of pre-sets. Select patterns intuitively from thumbnail images that visualize the lighting fixture movement as well as the colours and tones of lighting patterns. You can quickly edit your lighting performance to match the atmosphere of the party and track requests.

  1. Macro Editor feature for intuitively editing lighting sequences

Fine-tune lighting patterns by checking track analysis information such as waveforms and beatgrid. While listening to the music, you can edit patterns manually using the intuitive GUI.

  1. Fixture Library for flexible lighting fixture configuration

Using the lighting fixture library from AtlaBase Ltd, Lighting mode supports DMX fixtures from a wide variety of manufacturers. Create and save multiple lighting fixture configurations using fixtures you’ve assigned in the rekordbox Fixture Library. Lighting patterns are automatically recreated for each fixture configuration, so you can easily change the configuration you want to use according to the size and purpose of the event and venue. The AtlaBase fixture library comprises more than 13,000 unique fixtures. In the unlikely event that you can’t find your fixture, simply post a request in Pioneer DJ forum and the fixture will be added within a few working days.

About AtlaBase

AtlaBase is the most complete database of lighting fixtures and other products in the entertainment industry.

The team behind AtlaBase comprises a group of professionals who’ve carefully added data on thousands of items from almost every manufacturer around the world. The company’s mission is Dedicated Library Development & Support.

When connected to a PC/Mac using a USB cable, the RB-DMX1 can control a set of DMX512-supported lighting fixtures by converting information set in Lighting mode to DMX512 protocol.

  1. Compact, robust chassis
Take the RB-DMX1 out on the road with confidence. The unit is compact, portable and its seamless aluminium casing makes it highly robust, while the extended edges protect the terminals.
  2. Includes rekordbox dj license
The RB-DMX1 comes with a bundled license key for our professional DJ performance application rekordbox dj, so you can control digital tracks stored on your computer. Pioneer Pro Audio adds two new speakers to the active XPRS Series

Pioneer Professional Audio is adding two models to the XPRS Series of compact, high-powered active speakers: the XPRS10 two-way full range speaker, and the XPRS115S single 15-inch subwoofer.

XPRS10&XPRS115S_low_0926

Combining Pioneer Pro Audio sound engineering heritage with the reliable, energy-efficient power of Powersoft1 amps, the compact, portable wooden-enclosure XPRS Series offers a plug-and-play system that fills the room with a natural sound. The versatile speakers are ideal for live sound, mobile DJs, places of worship, rental and fixed installations. Both the XPRS10 and XPRS115S feature 15mm birch plywood enclosures for a dynamic sound that works for all musical genres.

The XPRS10 has a 10-inch LF driver, a 1.75-inch titanium diaphragm compression driver and Pioneer Pro Audio’s AFAST technology, all combining to deliver clear, clean audio with a deep bass range. Plus, the sound can be enhanced further using the four EQ modes with built-in DSP.

XPRS10_prm_angle_low_0904

The XPRS115S is the perfect complement to enhance the tight and powerful low-end, thanks to its 15-inch drivers and a versatile crossover switch for adjusting the low pass filter cut-off at various stages between 80 Hz and 150 Hz.

XPRS115S_prm_angle_low_0904

Powersoft Class D amps in each speaker deliver a massive 2400 W output, while Power Factor Correction (PFC) ensures energy efficiency and a reliable performance. Extra attention has been paid to protecting the amp and the speaker, with thermal limiting, an input limiter, DC offset removal, AC mains protection and more. Plus, the auto-ranging power supply detects and adapts to the voltage without compromising the sound quality, making the XPRS Series a reliable performer in any environment.

The road-ready XPRS Series is durable and easy to transport; the PA speakers’ handles are positioned to ensure the weight is distributed equally, while the sub comes with removable castors. The wedge-shaped XPRS10 can be placed on the floor and used as a foldback monitor for stage performances, or it can be pole-mounted at a 0-degree or 7-degree tilt to suit the required set-up.

The new XPRS speakers will be available from mid-October at MAPs of $999 for the XPRS10 and $1,399 for the XPRS115S.

KEY FEATURES OF THE XPRS SERIES

  1. Hardwood enclosures produce a natural sound

The XPRS speakers are enclosed in 15 mm birch plywood cabinets to deliver a natural, dynamic sound. Pioneer Pro Audio’s AFAST technology drastically reduces standing waves that can produce a muffled response in the low to mid ranges. An acoustic tube in the cabinet absorbs only the standing waves, increasing the low frequency response.

  1. Powersoft Class D amps for reliable, high-powered performance

Powersoft’s Class D amp modules produce 2400 W (peak) or 1200 W (continuous) output, similar to that of larger club speaker amps. The amps are equipped with Power Factor Correction (PFC) to reduce power consumption while ensuring reliability and a steady performance in all environments. The auto-ranging power supply means the XPRS Series can be plugged in anywhere in the world – including at venues with generators or temporary power supplies – and be expected to deliver the same high-quality sound.

  1. Advanced protection features help prolong speakers’ life

The XPRS speakers include several features to protect the driver, amp and power supply to ensure peace of mind, consistent high-quality sound, and to help extend the life of the sound system.

KEY FEATURES OF THE XPRS10

  1. High-performance drivers deliver a powerful, full range sound

The XPRS10 uses a high-grade ferrite 10-inch LF driver and a 1.75-inch titanium diaphragm compression driver to reproduce a clean, full range sound with low distortion even at high outputs. The newly designed compact horn sounds bright and clear.

  1. Four EQ modes for a variety of musical genres and environments

A rotary selector switch on the back of the XPRS10 give instant access to four EQ modes which enable the speaker’s performance to be tweaked for different applications:

  • Flat: neutral production of the source audio
  • Bass +: amplifies the bass for dance music events
  • Speech: produces clear vocal sounds for seminars and speeches
  • Wedge: reduces the low frequencies to give a more balanced sound when the speaker is used as a floor monitor
  1. Wedge shape and pole mount socket with tilt for a choice of three positions

The XPRS10 speakers are wedge shaped, making them ideal floor monitors. The pole mount socket can be set to straight or tilted to 7 degrees to direct the sound exactly where it’s needed.

  1. Multiple inputs and outputs for flexible, easy set-up

The speakers have two balanced XLR/TRS combo sockets and an unbalanced RCA connection, so a MIC and other external devices can be connected at the same time – including using an AUX cable to connect and play directly from portable audio players, line-level mixers and tablets/smartphones. Each input can be controlled individually or using the master controls for lines one and two. Plus, two balanced XLR through output terminals enable easy connection to other speakers and subs.

KEY FEATURES OF THE XPRS115S

  1. 15-inch LF driver produces quick response and rich low end

The durable, high-quality 15-inch LF driver and slanted baffle deliver tight, rich, and powerful low frequencies similar to those produced by the XPRS215S dual 15-inch subwoofer.

  1. Crossover and Phase switches deliver instant control of DSP settings

The Crossover switch allows for quick and easy adjustment of the cut-off frequency of the low pass filter, with a choice between 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz and 150Hz. The phase switch gives a choice of positive or negative polarity and prevents multiple subwoofers cancelling each other out.

  1. Multiple inputs and outputs for flexible, easy set-up

The XPRS115S has two balanced XLR/TRS combo sockets for connecting two devices at the same time. Dual balanced XLR through output terminals enable easy connection to other speakers and subs.

  1. Removable castors

Castors on the back of the cabinet take the hard work out of transit and set-up.

LONG-TERM EXTENDED WARRANTY WITH SECURITY

In addition to the standard 3-year warranty on Pioneer Pro Audio products, the free warranty period has been extended to 7 years upon online registration of the product. Availabilty of this warranty extension and its details vary by regions. More information and details of the extended warranty will be announced soon.

To help you get to grips with the features in rekordbox dj and rekordbox dvs, the design and layout of buttons and knobs has been refreshed in the rekordbox ver 5.0 update. Also, you can now customise the font size on the track browse screen to help you find tracks faster. The next-generation KORETECH engine, with its significantly updated audio/graphic/video signal processing algorithm, makes rekordbox highly stable and responsive, and enables you to search through tracks easily and perform intuitively.

Use the DDJ-XP1 to intuitively control all the features in the rekordbox dj and rekordbox dvs Plus Packs, including:

  • Key Shift

Mix any combination of tracks in perfect harmony by shifting their keys up or down. Key Sync automatically changes the key of your next track to match the master deck. You can reset keys at any time by pressing Key Reset.

  • Keyboard

Select a Hot Cue or create a new one, then use the 15 other pads on that deck to trigger it in different semitones. You can use this feature to improvise with sounds and create musical phrases as if you were playing on the keyboard of a synthesizer or other instrument.

  • Pad Editor

Customize the arrangement of the 32 Performance Pads by assigning not only your favorite pad modes, but also features, to each pad. For example, you could assign the top eight DDJ-XP1 pads to each deck in rekordbox dj for Hot Cues, using the rest for the Sampler feature.

  • Silent Cue

When using rekordbox dvs with turntables, switch on Silent Cue and the music will restart instantly and at the correct BPM when you press play on a stopped deck. This avoids the sound of the music speeding up as the turntable starts to revolve. You can choose a Hot Cue then hit play on the deck and it will sound the same as hitting a Cue on a multi-player.

  1. DJM-S9 now supports rekordbox dj/dvs

Our club-standard 2-channel performance mixer, the DJM-S9, is now compatible with rekordbox dj and rekordbox dvs. Its popular Magvel Fader Pro and effect levers are ideal for scratch performances and battles, and adding the DDJ-XP1 to your set-up expands the creative possibilities even further.

  1. Bundled licences for rekordbox dj and rekordbox dvs

Play tracks from your PC/Mac as soon as you unbox the DDJ-XP1. The DDJ-XP1 comes with free license keys for our professional dj performance application rekordbox dj and the rekordbox dvs Plus Pack, worth a combined $228, so you can control your digital music using multi-players or via turntables and the dedicated control vinyl (available separately). If you already own rekordbox dj and rekordbox dvs, download the latest version of rekordbox to use the DDJ-XP1.

  1. Accessories available
  • A new series of colored control vinyl for rekordbox dvs is now available. Choose from transparent, white, blue and red versions to match the color of your gear or your style.

KEY FEATURES OF THE INTERFACE 2

  1. High-quality sound

You can use the INTERFACE 2 at gigs thanks to its crystal-clear sound, inherited from our professional DJ gear. Supporting audio up to 96kHz, it features a high-quality D/A converter and the S/N ratio exceeds 110 dB, so it’s well suited for use in clubs.

  1. Compact, robust chassis

Take the INTERFACE 2 out on the road with confidence. The unit is compact, portable and its seamless aluminium casting makes it highly robust, while the extended edges protect the terminals.

  1. LEDs indicate signal flow

Connect the INTERFACE 2 to any DJ set-up quickly and easily, even in a dark club. After plugging into your laptop via USB, LED indicators on the INTERFACE 2’s top panel show signal flow, giving you a visual grasp of the setting status. You’ll immediately see if there’s a signal failure or a problem with a connection, or if the signal level is too low or high, for example when a turntable is incorrectly connected to the line input. The LEDs flash if a signal is in mono only.

  1. Includes control vinyl plus licenses for rekordbox dj and rekordbox dvs

The INTERFACE 2 comes with bundled license keys for our professional DJ performance application rekordbox dj and the rekordbox dvs Plus Pack, so you can control and scratch digital tracks stored on your computer. Using the engine of rekordbox dj, which uses the same audio signal processing in our professional DJ mixers and multiplayers, you can enjoy high-quality audio and low latency response.

  1. Other features
  • Mains or USB power – choose your preferred source
  • Stand-alone audio interface – use the INTERFACE 2 for recording audio to your computer or to send audio to speakers
  • Large signal GND terminal firmly holds turntables’ ground wires to reduce noise. The knob stays attached even when fully turned, so it can’t be dropped
  • High-quality audio – supports 1 kHz / 48 kHz / 96 kHz signals
  • DVS options – use time coded vinyl (included) or custom control signal WAV file for use via CDs or USB drive (free download available)

3 Things About Handling Customer Complaints I got wrong — so you don’t have to

By Glen Ervin:

If there’s one thing that a few decades in the DJ biz have taught me, it’s this: When the people paying you have a complaint you can’t just put on your headphones and look busy. You have to address it. And not only address it, but spin that sucker into 24k customer-satisfaction gold.

I didn’t always know how to do that.

There was a time when my go-to response, as embarrassing as it is to admit, was to attempt to convince the complainer they were wrong: My music selection was perfectly on target; the dance floor was full all night; there’s no way bar sales were slow. 20/20 hindsight shows that of course the club manager was right; I hadn’t yet learned to rotate a floor and sell the booze that paid my salary.

Lesson learned: Before you offer up your best defense (and for the record, NEVER offer up your best defense), try this: Listen carefully to what they have to say and let them finish. Begin by repeating back what you’ve heard to show that you’ve listened. You’ll quickly find you’re dealing with a more receptive critic and one step closer to a mutually satisfying solution.

This requires a lot more discipline that most think; it is not an easy thing to sit silently through a tirade. And harder still not to respond in kind. Don’t.

As I went from booth to buck-stops-here businessman, the mistakes didn’t exactly stop. I know firsthand how easy it is to get into the habit of firing off quick fixes as we power through our bloated inboxes each day. And felt firsthand the repercussions as my referral rate nose-dived.

Lesson learned: If you don’t completely understand the problem you can’t completely solve the problem (so don’t try). Better to begin with “Can you help me understand this a bit better?” and finish with “What can I do to make this right for you?” than offer a solution that doesn’t satisfy.

Most of the time, your customers aren’t telling you everything.

That’s why it’s so important to ask.

Complaints happen. And when they do it’s never enough to simply address a customer’s concerns. If they’re frustrated or angry as a result of your service – even if you feel you’ve done nothing to warrant it — the most effective response is the most simple and direct: Apologize. Simply say “I’m sorry about that.”

Lesson learned: Only after you take a ‘my bad’ for the team and show an eagerness to do right by them can you begin to bridge the gap between a dissatisfied customer and an active promoter of your business.

Listen. Ask questions. Dig deeper. Learn what you can do to be truly great.

 And then do it.

After being turned out to pasture following a 16-year club residency, Glen Ervin finds himself gainfully employed as Promo Only sales manager, media consultant and staff writer.
