Pioneer Pro Audio introduces the XY-3B and XY-2

Two powerful new speakers are joining Pioneer Pro Audio’s XY Series: the XY-3B three-way full range speaker and the XY-2 mid-high speaker.

Both are designed to deliver natural audio at the high sound pressure level (SPL) required for large venues and outdoor events.

The XY Series is well-known for providing excellent sound quality to nightclubs and music venues around the world. With the introduction of the XY-3B and XY-2, which offers the highest output in the Series, even more venues and events can benefit from an XY Series sound system tailored to their specific needs.

The next-level XY-3B was developed over the course of three years using 3D printers to create natural sound with high output. It’s been tested at numerous international festivals and outdoor events such as Xtrema Outdoor; Belgium and Netherlands; Lovebox, London; and Tomorrowland, Belgium. The XY-3B received enthusiastic feedback every time.

In the new XY-3B, an 8-inch cone driver delivers clean and precise mid-range frequencies using Pioneer Pro Audio’s X-Phase system. A 1-inch compression driver produces crystal-clear HF which, thanks to the molded Bi-horn, seamlessly blends with the mids. Two 12-inch cone drivers create tight, chest-pumping low end.

The XY-2 speaker is the mid-high section of the XY-3B. Designed specifically for large-scale venues and stadia, the XY-2 can be used for PA applications, as a DJ booth monitor or as a down fill in an XY-3B cluster setting.

The new XY Series speakers will be available from early 2018 at MAPs of $5,500 for the XY-3B and $3,000 for the XY-2.

KEY FEATURES OF THE XY-3B

Moulded Bi-horn

The 8-inch mid-range driver and the 1-inch compression driver are attached to the integrated waveguide with their depths perfectly aligned to minimize the difference of physical distance and reduce cancellation around the crossover frequency. This unique Bi-horn combines mid and high frequencies in a deep position inside the waveguide, improving the blend of the sounds compared to the performance of a conventional separated horn structure. The waveguide’s curved shape perfectly controls dispersion at 50 degrees horizontal and 35 degrees vertical, providing natural sound with high SPL in the targeted area while reducing the sound pressure outside that area.

X-Phase system with gold X-Phase plug

Driver cone cancellation is minimized thanks to Pioneer Pro Audio’s X-Phase system. The convex shape forces sound waves into small slits which are arranged in a fan shape, allowing all sound waves to exit in perfect phase aliment. The sound waves are forced over the top and bottom of the X-phase plug, producing higher SPL and greater sound projection over long distances.

Hybrid low-mid section

A hybrid dual 12-inch chamber in the low-mid section allows the drivers to produce tight notes. The LF drivers are also coated with a water-resistant finish on both sides, so you can use the XY-3 speakers outdoors. Plus, the added stiffness of this treatment allows the drivers to deliver a natural tightness rather than using thicker speaker cone material which would add weight and slow down the speed of the cones.

Rigging and tour ready

Rigging: Flying hardware options are available, along with ground stacking configurations.
Tour ready: Every detail of the XY-3 was designed to make it the perfect speaker to take on the road. You can load the speakers into trucks with the minimal amount of space lost, and they can be stacked two-high and four-wide when used with the XY-3 wheel board.

The XY-2 is a mid-high speaker taken from the mid-high range horn section of the XY-3B. A yoke is installed as standard and it can be used for various applications including as a PA speaker for large stadiums, a DJ booth monitor, or as a down fill for an XY-3B cluster setting.

Pioneer upgrades their popular Serato DJ Controller with the new DDJ-SR2

Pioneer has upgraded one of their popular Serato DJ controllers to create the 2-channel DDJ-SR2.

You can use the new dedicated controls to get hands on with the latest features in Serato DJ, including the Pitch ‘n Time DJ Expansion Pack, with Key Shift, Key Sync, and Pitch Play controls. The lightweight and portable DDJ-SR2 is Serato DVS Upgrade Ready (license available separately), making it one of the most compact DVS-ready controllers*¹ that enables perfect harmonic control using Serato DJ.

The DDJ-SR2 inherits design traits and features from our professional DJ gear including multi-coloured Performance Pads that give you instant feedback on pad modes and playing statuses, plus generous space between faders, buttons and knobs for comfortable, intuitive mixing and scratching. Thanks to the high-quality aluminium-finish top panel and jog wheels, the controller is approximately 18 percent lighter than its predecessor, so you can easily take it wherever you go.

High-quality audio design

The HDJ-X10 headphones are equipped with our new 50-mm HD driver, making them the world’s first DJ headphones to reproduce high-resolution sound from 5 Hz to 40 kHz. The direct drive structure, with a newly developed diaphragm shape and voice coil, delivers high-quality sound without loss of quality due to mechanic loss. Creating rich bass notes and clean mid-to-high frequencies, the flagship headphones enable accurate point source monitoring, even at loud volumes, and allow you to make a deeper connection to the music.

The HDJ-X7 headphones provide the same audio experience as the professional HDJ-2000MK2 model and feature a newly developed 50-mm driver. The shape and materials of the new diaphragm are optimized to create tight bass notes and clean high frequencies so you can enjoy accurate monitoring.

Features inherited from HDJ-2000 models

As successors to the HDJ-2000 models, the HDJ-X headphones inherit popular professional features such as flexible swivels to enable comfortable monitoring however you wear them. The housing on the HDJ-X10 model incorporates an auto-return mechanism so the rotated housing automatically resets to its neutral position when you release it.

Replacement parts available

You can easily renew the detachable cables and ear pads on all HDJ-X headphones using replacement parts (available separately). Each model comes with its own cable and the HDJ-X7 and HDJ-X5 models have a mutually compatible bayonet connector, so you can purchase an alternative cable type if you prefer (available separately). Replacement ear pads for the HDJ-X10 and HDJ-X7 are available and either set can be fitted to any of the HDJ-X models, including the HDJ-X5.

All the HDJ-X headphones feature a refined look and durable construction. The HDJ-X10 and HDJ-X7 models are finished in a metallic design incorporating aluminium spin processing and diamond cutting to the housings, which shine under club and stage lighting. When you’re travelling to gigs, you can be confident your HDJ-X10 headphones will be well protected in the included flat carrying case. Made from strong materials to protect your headphones from bumps and knocks on flights and in transit, the case has inner pockets for storing accessories such as USB devices and SD cards, and its handle makes carrying easy. The HDJ-X7 and HDJ-X5 both come with a compact carrying pouch, which snugly fits around the folded headphones to save space in your luggage and reduce the risk of damage on the road.

Various accessories included

The HDJ-X10 and HDJ-X7 headphones come with two detachable cables: a 1.2 m coiled cable (approximately 3.0 m when extended) and a 1.6 m straight cable. The HDJ-X5 model comes with a 1.2 m short coiled cable (approximately 1.8 m when extended) that’s ideal for both DJ performances and everyday listening. An L-type mini-jack prevents the connection from being knocked or accidentally disconnected during performances, even in cramped booths.

Pioneer Pro DJ Announces the New DDJ-SZ2

Pioneer DJ has upgraded their flagship Serato DJ controller to create the DDJ-SZ2. Use the new DDJ-SZ2 4-channel controller to get hands-on with the latest additions to Serato DJ, including key shift, key sync, pitch play and Serato Flip. 6 Things Your Bride Won’t Tell You (until it’s too late)

No one likes a bad review. Especially DJs. Especially on bridal sites such as WeddingWire and The Knot. Bad reviews are, after all, bad for business.

How can you make sure your reviews remain largely five stars? Let’s count the ways…

Map out the major moments

Wedding party introductions, first dance, father/daughter, mother/son, bouquet toss, garter toss, last song – most bride’s are quick to let you know what songs they’d like played; few, however, consider the full impact of their choices. Does the bride want to spend a full four-minute song dancing with her new hubby or would she prefer a quick spin? How long is the groom comfortable dancing with his mom, etc.? Never miss the chance to communicate your concern for your client’s comfort prior to the event.

You had one job

I once managed to screw up “Smith.” Yep. There it was on the grand entrance list the bride had given me: “Smyth.” What she failed to tell me – and I failed to ask – was that it was pronounced “Sm-eye-th.” I have since learned to write EVERY unusual name or spelling – first and last – down pho-net-tic-lee.

The more you know the better the show

It’s one thing to see “Hot In Herre” on a client’s playlist and another to hear from the bride that the song “was our high-school jam and will keep my girls on the floor.” Or that anything by Stevie Wonder will be a big hit with the bride’s mom. That info, and a well-timed spin, is your ticket to greatness. Ask for the story behind the songs.

Establish a do-not play zone

While most brides have no problem giving a DJ the leeway to takes requests, don’t hesitate to ask if there are any songs or genres she prefers not to hear. And be prepared to inform guests that the couple has asked that those songs not be played on “their day” – and to immediately offer said guest the chance to make another request.

Pump up the volume (or not)

Check out the room’s layout in advance and place your gear accordingly, preferably square in front of the dance floor. Elevate your speakers above the heads of those sitting and avoid setting your speakers up near tables. Be willing to adjust levels, as needed. Or be prepared to hear about it.

Degrees of Separation

Strained family relationships happen. And can take sudden unpleasant turns if not pro-actively addressed with your bride prior to your event. So ask if there are any divorces, separations or other family matters you need to be aware of in making your announcements.

Showing the utmost care and sensitivity for your client’s most important day is the surest way to leave a lasting positive impression.

Is Facebook Live the end of the DJ Mix Tape? Part 1

Mix tapes and DJs go together like peanut butter and jelly. The mix tape is a DJ’s calling card. A DJ’s sonic resume. Personally, I come from a point in time when you actually used tape to do a mix tape. But we’ve all made mix CDs… for our girlfriends, boyfriends, travel tunes, business cards, promotional showcases — the uses are endless.

Fast forward to our current state of affairs: SoundCloud, Mixcloud, Facebook, Facebook Live are all great vehicles that allow DJs to share their talent with the world. However, there is conflict in the air. The waters are churning. There is strife between the DJ world and the digital world. The same vehicle(s) that have allowed DJs to share their vision and skills with the world are now clamping down on the sharing and showcasing of those skills.

I am not a lawyer, nor do I play one on TV, but I did have the following facts checked by a lawyer (who is also a DJ, producer, and copyright holder), so as to simply and correctly explain why mix tapes and the streaming of those mixes are being removed.

Let’s dig in….

DJs need to realize that the music they mix, play, use, and purchase is not “your” music. It’s natural to draw the conclusion that because you have purchased a song you’re allowed to play it publicly in a DJ set. Well, according to U.S. copyright law, this is incorrect.

There are several types of rights copyright owners must obtain under the law to distribute musical works, all of which are exclusive, including:

Public Performance (transmitting or performing the work in public)
Reproduction (copying/duplicating)
Digital Performance (internet streaming)

With that information in hand, we can move forward and explain why DJs aren’t allowed to post, stream, or share their mixes.

When a DJ spins at a nightclub, it’s incumbent on the venue to make sure they have a license for public performance. This license is acquired from the PROs (performance rights organizations). When the venue has a public performance license, it means that DJs can play recorded music registered with the PRO.

Radio stations pretty much work the same way. The difference is the radio stations license is for broadcast. Their license authorizes the radio station to play music on public airwaves.

Streaming services do not have a clear relationship with PROs. When a DJ creates a live stream and starts broadcasting music on the internet, that DJ becomes, in effect, a radio station. As such, he or she needs to have the appropriate licenses.

No licenses, no stream.

This is, unfortunately, where we find ourselves today – at the crossroads of artistic expression and the rights of copyright holders.

It’s apparent that copyright laws are falling behind: DJ sets are not a protected form of free speech. Our sets don’t generally fall under “fair use”.

As such, copyright takedowns happen.

Two Ways & Two Words to be More “Able”

“Are you able?” When one hears that question, they may wonder immediately if they are “able-bodied.” Or they may think of someone asking them to do something and if they can fit it into their busy schedule or not. Those are good thoughts, but I would encourage you to start thinking of “able” in a different context.

Personable

Are you personable? Do your actions or words resonate with people? How do you move people emotionally? How can you ensure you are more personable with those you come into contact with on a daily basis?

Let’s get down to the nitty-gritty of how to connect with someone and be more personable.

What are the 2 most important words in connecting? What might you say to become more personable? What words you can use to draw out what is most important to someone?

Really…and?

People love to share stories. When you use the 2 most important words in connecting you genuinely become interested. You want to know more. You gain a deeper level of connection because the person speaking feels engaged and they will go on with their story in greater detail, sharing more intimate details of the situation and providing you with a greater opportunity to connect on a different subject matter or in a different way.

Memorable

Empathy equals excellence. You create connection when you create an emotional experience for your potential client. How do you that? How can you ensure that you’ll stay memorable with that person? How can you guarantee that they think about you long after you part ways?

Here’s one idea: Hand a card to your clients at end of the sales meeting. This card is good for FREE (insert low cost/high value offer here) when you use the hashtag #InsertYourCompanyHashtagHere and post about your wedding on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter. Third party advertising is huge and a great way to boost your reach in a market.

Remember: People respond best to a unique advantage. In order to capitalize on your unique advantage you must be personable and memorable in every point of contact you may have with someone. The better prepared you are the more effective and enjoyable the experience can be.

Mixing as a DJ

First, a DJ must have a passion about music. That’s what usually gets us going down the path of becoming a DJ: a love of music. Along the way we learn programming matters. We figure out that if you line up certain songs in a certain way, you have great crowd responses. We learn to read a crowd; another skill that once developed is indispensable in being able to command a floor / room.

Which brings us to an often-overlooked skill set every DJ should have in their arsenal: mixing (and to a little venting about those DJs who, sadly, couldn’t care less about it).

I believe mixing is something intrinsic to being DJ, a skill so fundamental, so integral, so elementary, and so organic (I’ll lay off the thesaurus now…) that I can’t fathom being a DJ without the ability to blend songs together. Why would anyone shun the ability to make themselves better, make their work better, and to set themselves apart from other DJs?

Mixing allows for a smooth, harmonious and melodious transition from one song to another. Mixing ensures there’s no “dead air” from song to song. Mixing grants your floor / crowd an uninterrupted progression of the musical journey you’re working so hard to create.

Do you want to represent yourself in the best possible way and let the music / mixing speak for your endeavors? Would you rather sound like a bunch of sneakers in the washing machine, or worse — like the local Clear Channel radio station? (Yes, I know Clear Channel is a thing of the past. That’s why I used that name. My lawyers said it was kosher.)

I once had a gentleman point out to me the “history” of DJing, going back to the 1930s. He mentioned prominent names and cited historical dates as hallmarks to bolster his position that these early pioneers were perfect examples of why it wasn’t necessary to concern ourselves with a trivial 3-5 seconds of meshed music.

Well, that is all well and good, but doesn’t mean squat. With all due respect to those pioneers, mobile DJs and club DJs aren’t partying like it’s 1929; today those “deejays” would be called radio personalities. I’ll acquiesce that I can’t do what they can do. I also say with 110% certainty, most radio personalities can’t do what today’s DJs can do.

I’ll challenge ANY DJ to pick 10 songs, that’s 9 segues.

Test A: Don’t mix a lick. Blend, don’t blend, and try to avoid having 4 out of 9 of those segues sound like straight up train wrecks that would have even Marlee Matlin grimacing.

Test B: Mix the tracks in a linear, harmonious fashion.

Then tell me how the floor reacts to each test.
I’m not a betting man, but I’ll lay heavy money the people in Test B are going to have a better experience than the people in Test A.

My point in all this: Learn your craft. Get your fundamentals down pat. If you don’t know how to mix, learn. It’s not that difficult. If I can do it, you can do it. You don’t have to be the Michael Jordan of mixing. Kevin McHale had a Hall of fame career off the bench.

Any mixing is better than no mixing, kinda like sex. Something simple, clean, quick and musical. It doesn’t take much. If you’re not mixing, you’re not DJing (yeah I said it.) Heck, there are apps on your phone that can mix.

There’s no excuse for a professional DJ not to mix. That’s what the Sync button is for.

Now go out there and learn something.
